Discussion of List of Herbicides for F & G to Test in Spring

Discussion of Safe Cleaning Products

  • What are the goals of list?
    1. Non-toxic to people, pets, wild-animals, plants, septic systems?
    2. Biodegradable products that don’t disturb ecological processes – do not contain phosphate, ozone depleting chemicals
    3. Types of containers – biodegradable, recyclable, compostable?
    4. Animal testing (if animal testing is not acceptable, what criteria do we use to ensure no harm to users or those unintentionally exposed?)
  • List of uses (e.g. laundry products, dishwashing products, bathroom cleaning products, floor products, furniture products, etc.)
  • Prioritize list of uses – which products do we research first?
  • ???

Discussion of Pre- and Post-emergent ‘Natural’ Herbicide List

  • What are the goals of list?
  • What plants are targets for herbicides? Which plants are ‘difficult’?
  • Products on the list will be discussed in terms of efficacy and safety concerns

Discussion of Procedures for Notification

  • When is notification necessary, e.g., pesticide application, new floors, painting, road re-surfacing, etc.?
  • Who on the EAAHC is responsible for ensuring the Appendix (this pertains to pesticide application) is completed?
  • Who on the EAAHC is responsible for ensuring the information is gathered for the website?
  • Who is responsible for writing the information to be posted on the ECIA website, Community Bulletin Board, e-Blasts, ECIA signage, text message and phone call message?
  • Who is responsible for ensuring the Appendix and all written information posted to the ECIA website?
  • Who is responsible for ensuring e-Blasts and text messages are sent, phone calls are made and signage message is posted?

Approval of July 31, 2018 Meeting Minutes

Notifications:

  • Our EAAHC Goals and Charter were approved by the ECIA Board.
  • Community Center piñon trees were evaluated by Coates Tree service, Tree Doctor 911, Heads Up Landscaping, NM State Forestry Entomologist Dr.John Formby and Tree Technologies Certified Arborist Cristine Freeman-Silver.
  • Coates tree service review of piñon trees suggested deep watering (every 3 weeks). They did find scale and suspects fungus from over water and drought stress. Proposal to apply to base of diseased piñon trees (trunk drench), Mallet 2F T+O Systemic Insecticide. Recommended fertilizer treatment for conifers.
  • Heads Up Landscaping encouraged deep more frequent watering, suspected scale and twig beetle and recommended Biopak fertilizer and Merrit truck injections now and again in fall.
  • Tree Doctor 911 recommended deep watering every 2-3 weeks, and suggested injectable tree trunk treatment now and in the fall for scale and mites of unknown pesticide.
  • Special EAAHC meeting August 3, 2018: NM State Forestry Entomologist Dr. John Formby, stated piñon trees were drought stressed and needed better irrigation. He recommended placing a soaker hose at the drip line of each tree and heavy watering once a month. Dr. Formby suggested fertilizing piñon trees with a low nitrogen and high p+k conifer fertilizer. He suggested the patio bricks are not allowing a proper water to the tree roots and some adjustments need to be made. Dr Formby suggested using a high pressure power wash of piñon trees in spring 2019 to remove scale and clean up fallen debris. He also suggested using a power wash of gentle soap and water if needed to remove scale egg webs. Dr Formby noticed twig beetles on some of the trees and recommended a licensed arborist properly prune back all infested branches and dispose trash to prevent further infestation. John recommended  Christine with Tree Technologies.
  • Cristine came out August 23 to evaluate sickly piñon trees, with David McDonald and Karen Murry present. Cristine noticed scale and twig beetle infestation. She recommended spraying with dormant oil mixed with permethrin around April 15 2019 to treat the scale and twig beetle infestation (She recommended to use, Ramone from the “Bug Man” not NM Pest Control as vender). Cristine recommended deep water every 2-3 weeks for the piñon trees. She did not feel it would be healthy to trim twig beetle infestation off the sickly piñon trees as the tree branches are very sparse and thin. She recommended a low nitrogen, high P+K conifer fertilizer.
  • ECIA Board will evaluate all the piñon tree proposals during the Board working session and Board meeting.
  • Task group: Stephanie Levy wrote a Vista Article for Contact List for Pesticide Notice to be reviewed by the ECIA Board, and if approved, be included in the next Vistas issue.
  • Environmental Advisory has not established a list of green weed treatments for the hike/bike paths..
  • CC Railroad Room polished concrete flooring has been scheduled for mid-September.

  • Update on the review of suggestions of possible eco-safe products to use as weed abatement on the hike/bike paths.
  • Review three proposed amendment changes to the Draft Interim for Procedure for Pesticide Applications.
  • Voting on the three proposed amendment changes and possible revision of the Draft Interim for procedure for Pesticide Application.
  • Review and formal vote on Draft Interim for Procedure for Pesticide Application. If motion is committee approved, it will be sent to ECIA Board for review and advisement.
