Weed Treatment for the Hike/Bike Trail Repairs
Weed Treatment for the Hike/Bike Trail Repairs
Repairs on the Hike/Bike Trails will begin during the week of October 8th with the widening of the cracks larger than one inch on Ave. Torreon, Ave. de Compadres and Ave. Casa Del Oro. Rock salt will then be applied to suppress the weeds, and the cracks will be patched with asphalt. No other herbicides will be used on the large cracks.
On October 20th, the cracks smaller than one inch on the approximately one-half mile of asphalt Hike/Bike Trail along Ave. de Compadres between Herrada Rd. and Ave. Eldorado will be cleaned out. After the cleaning, the herbicide “Pendulum” will be applied in a close spraying of the cracks with a narrow nozzle and they will immediately be sealed with a hot asphalt sealer. Information about “Pendulum” will be posted on the website and signage will be posted at the site one week prior to application and remain in place for one week after.
Also on October 20th, the cracks smaller than one inch on the asphalt Hike/Bike Trail along Ave. Torreon between Ave. Vista Grande and Ave. Eldorado will be cleaned out. After the cleaning, the cracks will be sealed with a hot asphalt sealer. No herbicide will be applied.
On October 21st, the cracks smaller than one inch on the asphalt Hike/Bike Trail along Ave. Casa Del Oro between Ave. Eldorado. and Balsa Rd will be cleaned out. After the cleaning, the organic herbicide “Gluten-8 OLP” will be applied in a close spraying of the cracks with a narrow nozzle and they will immediately be sealed with a hot asphalt sealer. The active ingredient in “Gluten-8 OLP” is corn gluten. Information about ““Gluten-8 OLP”” will be posted on the website and signage will be posted at the site one week prior to application and remain in place for one week after. No herbicide will be applied to the cracks in the Ave. Casa Del Oro Trail between Balsa Rd. and Ave. Vista Grande. They will only be cleaned and sealed with hot asphalt sealer.
This will allow us to measure the effectiveness of three different approaches to treating the weeds in the Hike/Bike Trails and will help us make more informed decisions in the future. If you would like telephone notification, please contact the ECIA offices at 466-4248.

Torreon Hike/Bike Trail Closed
Torreon Hike/Bike Trail Closed
The Torreon Hike/Bike Trail will be closed for safety reasons until Tuesday, October 16th. Repairs were begun this week and due to a breakdown at the asphalt plant, the materials to repair the large cutouts will not be available until late Friday. The white substance in the cutouts is rock salt to control weed growth.
Thank you for your patience - we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Work is scheduled to begin on October 1st and 2nd for the seal coating on Avenida Monte Alto Hike/Bike Trail. There will be NO TOXIC PESTICIDES used in this section of the repairs. The few weeds in the trail will be treated with a citrus based product and a Vinegar/Blue Dawn solution to test their effectiveness.
The repair crews will be cutting out the larger cracks in the other trails, starting on October 8th and we will post the rest of the work schedule as soon as we have it. We will post notification and cordon off the areas to be repaired in accordance with the Ad-Hoc Environmental Advisory Committee’s recommendations.
